So I'm currently working on a feature story about it for a parenting website from the angle of it being dubbed "mommy porn".

I want opinions from people who loved it... and why. I want opinions from people who hated it... and why. If you feel the need to contribute, I may or may not use your comments, but I'd appreciate everything I can get. I have plenty of info from the Interwebs, but being a former reporter, it's hard to shake the impulse to get ACTUAL quotes from ACTUAL people.
I read the whole series in a few days and was entertained by the primary plot and I enjoyed the conflicts and character interactions. The character development was weak and all the emphasis on the sex scenes left much to be desired. It just got monotonous after the first book. I understand why people are so drawn to the novels because they are risqué, but they go no more in depth than a typical romance novel. To me, the 50 Shades series is just a well funded romance novel trying to masquerade as cutting edge literature.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Steph. That is a great comment. I just didn't find it all that risque at all. I found myself skipping over large parts of the books because they were so repetitive. I felt like I had to skip over things like Ana describing every single minute of her day to get to the plot. Jack Hyde was by far my favorite character. Christian and Ana just drove me bonkers.
ReplyDeleteI'm a sadist by nature, so naturally the plot of the books piqued my interest fiercely. Now, I enjoyed the story line, the sex scenes did become very monotonous after a while, and I felt the writing well, for lack of a better sucked. I did not like the names certain body parts were given. But overall I loved the story line, and I loved how the subject matter of that book was brought mainstream. I felt so sad when I reached the end.
ReplyDeleteLike, DOWN THERE? LOL. That cracked me up.
ReplyDeleteI thought it was utter crap. its got more hype then mills and boon and doesnt warrent it. It was repetitive, lank, and rather dull. Im sick too, with the same condition as this writer, and i spend alot of my time absorbed in books, trying to experience others lives, others emotions etc, in the form of literature, as i dont get to do much else with my time. I would not read the rest in the fifty shades collection, if this book was anything to go on, it seems that its literally all hype so the women reading it can melt away with ideas of s&m, bondage, and maybe a more interesting and perky sex life. Id rather put my effort into spicing up my sexlife, then reading about someone who has a spicy sex life. There is alot to be said for experiencing certain things for yourself, instead of reading a rather monotone description of what someone is doing to someone else, and enjoying the thought, without ever really experiencing the things that said readers crave to actually enjoy in a physical form rather than fantasy.
